In the crisis areas, UNDP works closely with people to address their social and economic needs, and restore confidence across conflict divides.

Confidence Building Early Response Mechanism (COBERM)

With Euro 4.4 million in funding from the European Union, UNDP promotes confidence building within and across communities divided by conflicts.

The EU/UNDP programme is looking for specific initiatives that facilitate people-to-people contacts, contribute to good governance and media, address security and safety concerns, and improve environment for peaceful resolution of conflicts.

Throughout 2011, COBERM assisted a number of joint activities, such as youth summer camps, peace journalism, and rehabilitation of infrastructure near the Administrative Boundary Lines.

Human Security and Social Integration programme (HuSSIP)

With funding from the government of Norway, UNDP works in the Samegrelo region of Georgia – home for about 80 thousand of IDPs. A USD 3 million programme assists the displaced and local residents to become self-sustainable, receive better education, start new businesses and improve job prospects.

In 2011, UNDP helped the professional colleges in Poti and Zugdidi to introduce new educational programmes in the areas of construction, agriculture and Information Technologies. UNDP opened the Business Development Centre in Poti to assist start-up businesses. Furthermore, UNDP rehabilitated a kindergarten in the IDP settlement in Poti and the water supply system and sport sites in Khobi, Senaki and Tsalenjikha.
