Recovery, Conservation and Sustainable Use of Georgia’s Agro Biodiversity
Description
The project promotes the conservation and sustainable use of the threatened local plant genetic resources that are important for food production and agriculture.
In the Samtskhe-Javakheti region - historically the main granary of Georgia, the project promotes on-farm conservation of local agricultural biodiversity.
In addition, it supports the development and implementation of a strategy to replicate best practices in the conservation and use of local agricultural biodiversity to the other regions of Georgia.
The project focuses on five major activities:
- Establishment of sources of primary seed and planting material for the threatened crops and fruit varieties.
- Supporting the local farmers’ associations.
- Assistance to farmers in accessing the markets of organic products.
- Dissemination of information on local agricultural biodiversity among the farmers, authorities, research stations, donors and other stakeholders.
- Replication of the best practices to the other region(s) of Georgia.
