STATISTICAL REPORT

(1998-1999)

The statistical report Labour Force in Georgia: 1998-1999 represents labour statistics obtained from the household-based labour force survey conducted quarterly throughout 1998-1999 by the State Department for Statistics of Georgia in co-operation with the ILO experts. The survey covered both rural and urban areas in all provinces and districts of Georgia apart from Abkhazia and South Ossetia and was based on a representative sample of 6,645 households distributed proportionately between the rural and urban areas on the basis of population size. With this sample size, it was possible to make estimates at provincial and national levels.

The statistical report on the state of labour market is being published in Georgia for the first time. The current economic processes in the country – the replacement of one economic system by another – have required a change in the statistical methods of accounting for the economic data needed to portray these developments accurately. The labour market is one of the most dynamically developing and changing spheres of the current day. The Georgian labour market has undergone critical changes in a relatively short period of time. The scale of unemployment has grown dramatically. The structures of employment and distribution have also undergone change. At the same time, the importance of self-employment and the role of the private sector in creating new jobs have increased. All these factors have warranted a systematic study of the state of the labour market.

The report allows tracing dynamics of labour market throughout 1998-1999 in Georgia, presenting different aspects of labour force, such as age, sex, type of economic activity and other aspects.

This report has been published with the financial assistance of UNDP Georgia within the UNDP/ILO project "Technical Assistance to Georgia in the Field of Labour Statistics."
